Flaky Delight: Making Your Own Spicy Jamaican Beef Patties

Flaky Spicy Beef PattyJamaican spicy beef patties are so delicious, you’ll find yourself wanting to buy them by the dozen. But what if you learn to make your own beef patties at home? You won’t have to run out of patties, and you can also share them with the rest of the family.

Jamaican spicy beef patties are filling and tasty. Eating one of these and drinking a glass of juice will keep you feeling full for a while.

This Jamaican spicy beef patty is a 3-step process, cooking the filling, making the patty dough, and then baking the patties. It may take a little time to get everything prepared, but in the end, it will be all worth it.

Jamaican Beef Patty Filling

  • Ground beef
  • Allspice/pimento
  • Green onions
  • Thyme
  • Garlic
  • Meat seasoning
  • Scotch Bonnet pepper
  • Bread crumbs
  • Browning
  • Olive oil

To make your patty filling taste great, you may want to pre-season the ground beef from the night before. This will ensure that the seasoning is well soaked into your ground beef.

If you want your beef patties to be really hot and spicy, you can add a chopped scotch bonnet pepper including the seeds. Keep in mind that real scotch bonnet is extremely spicy hot, so don’t use more than you can tolerate. It’s your choice to decide how much spiciness you can manage.

Mix the bread crumbs with some water, and add it to your ground beef to create a rich texture. Prepare your ground beef and set it aside to cool, then move on to the dough.

Making a Flaky Beef Patty Dough

You want your Jamaican patty dough to come out flaky and scrumptious. You don’t want it to be hard, so there are some special ingredients that will make it just the way you want it, flaky and nice.

  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour (sifted gives a lighter texture crust)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp tumeric powder (to make the dough yellow)
  • 2 tbsp  beef tallow
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp shortening
  • Ice Water
  • 1 egg
  • Rolling pin
  • Fork

Combine all your dry ingredients, then add your butter, shortening, and beef tallow, working them in with your fingers. Use ice water and the whisked egg to mold all your ingredients into a dough. Your dough should not be stretchy, it should be easy to break apart.

A breakable texture will make your patty dough more flaky. Not all patties are made equally. One of the main ingredients that make Jamaican patties have that flaky texture, is beef suet, which is the beef fat from around the kidneys and loins.

Jamican beef patty doughOnce everything is combined, your dough will start to take on a golden color. Wrap your dough in saran wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least 30-45 minutes to make the dough set.

It’s now time to create individual patty crusts. Break off pieces of dough large enough to make one patty. Roll each piece in your palm to make a ball shape, then use a rolling pin on a floured clean surface, to roll out the piece of dough into a circular shape.

Put the patty filling in the center of the crust. Fold the crust over the filling, making sure the two ends meet together. Use your palm to make the shape that you want your patty to have. Use a cookie cutter or knife to cut off the excess dough.

Hot and Spicy Beef Jamaican patties Use a fork to seal the edges to prevent the meat from leaking out when baking. Also, use the fork to bore holes in the center of the pastry to prevent your patties from bursting. (See picture to the left)

Place them on a baking sheet that’s lightly floured or greased. Bake for at least 25 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Finally, you can remove your Jamaican spicy beef patty and enjoy.

Creative Breakfast: Feel Good With a Hearty Bowl of Banana Porridge

Green Banana PorridgeIf you find yourself struggling in the mornings to find something nutritious, but delicious to eat, try a bowl of banana porridge. You can enjoy this natural energy-boosting breakfast in a matter of minutes.

Most times we buy green bananas and have them in the refrigerator until they turn ripe. Instead of keeping them until they become ripened, then throwing them out, make your own green banana porridge from scratch.

Up Your Iron Levels With Banana Porridge

Green bananas are rich in iron. So, if your iron level is low, you can help build it up by drinking banana porridge regularly. Bananas are usually plentiful in the grocery stores. You can buy a good amount and keep them in the drawer of your refrigerator.

Help Green Bananas Stay Green Longer in the Fridge

To keep your bananas fresh and green for weeks, put them in a huge Ziploc bag or keep them in the clear plastic bags that you normally get them in from the grocery store. Keep them in the bottom drawer of your refrigerator. I’ve been doing that for years, and now my bananas don’t ripe up on me anymore.

How I Make My Banana Porridge

  • Wash 3 green bananas.
  • Peel them.
  • Grate the bananas or slice and blend them.
  • Add water to the gratered bananas.
  • Add a pinch of salt.
  • Add cinnamon powder, cinnamon leaves, or barks.
  • Use a whisk or a fork to combine the mixture.
  • Pour in a pot.
  • Stir occasionally in the pot to prevent burning.
  • Boil for 15-20 minutes.
  • Sweeten with the sweetener of your choice.
  • Add nutmeg, vanilla or other spices of your choice.

A Trick to Get Thicker Banana Porridge

If you like your green banana porridge thick, you can add a little flour to it. Make sure you mix the flour with cold water to prevent lumps of flour in your porridge. Add that mixture to  your porridge and let it boil. This delicious bowl of porridge is a quick way to jump-start your day.

Add Some Zest to Your Thanksgiving Dinner with Refreshing Sorrel Drink

Thanksgiving/Christmas Sorrel Drink
Thanksgiving/Christmas Sorrel Drink

Sorrel is a natural herb that most of you may already know. Each year I look forward to making my own natural sorrel drink during the holiday season. They sell them fresh in most West Indian stores or you can buy them dried in the package. I typically see dried packaged sorrel in Publix Supermarkets. Just make sure that you check the aisle with the Caribbean products.

As the holiday season rolls around, I normally start checking out the Jamaican stores or other Caribbean stores for this delicious herb to make my sorrel drink. I’ll add it to my Thanksgiving meal as well as Christmas.

When you make your own fresh, organic drink from scratch, it comes out more rich and tasty than those that are pre-made. Some people make their sorrel months in advance and put a lot of rum in it to preserve it. This is the recipe for my natural sorrel drink.

Things You’ll Need

3 cups Fresh Sorrel (less if you are using dried)
9-10 cups water
3 tablespoons grated ginger
1 tbsp pimento
2 cinnamon sticks
2 cups brown sugar
2-3 tbsp white rum
Strainer
Container

  1. Look through the sorrel petals carefully for dirt or other debris.
  2. Wash the sorrel, then drain off the water.
  3. Grate a piece of ginger. I like a lot of ginger, so I normally put at least 3 tablespoons in mine.
  4. Add the water to the pot, then add the ginger and cinnamon to the water. Bring the water to boiling point.
  5. Add the sorrel and pimento seeds to the pot.
  6. Let your sorrel boil for at least 5 minutes with the pot covered. Leave the cover on the pot and then let the steam work its way through the sorrel and the ingredients. I  always leave me sorrel overnight in the water, to ensure that I get all the nutrients from the sorrel petals. The petals usually look pink after I drain the water off.
  7. Now this is the fun part. Mixing your sorrel drink to suit your taste. Some like it gingery, while others may like it with a strong taste of Jamaican white rum.
  8. Strain the sorrel juice into a separate container.
  9. Add your sugar, and stir with a spoon. Sorrel can be a bit tart, so you may need a good amount of sugar to make it taste right.
  10. Last, but not least, add your white rum for an extra kick, then serve on the rocks.

Share this nutritious, tasty drink recipe with your friends and family this holiday season, and don’t forget to drink responsibly.

Tips:

If you want to preserve your sorrel, add some raw white rice and pimento seeds after pouring it into a bottle.
