If your dreadlocks growth is at a standstill, you may want to give natural clove water a try to give it a boost in hair growth and health. Cloves are not only packed with tons of nutrients but also carries a sweet fragrance that will complement other essential oils for your locs.

You can make clove water for your dreadlocks with just a few simple ingredients. Start by finding a glass bottle; an empty olives bottle or something similar will do.

How to Make Clove Water for Dreadlocks Growth

Add about 2 tablespoons of natural whole cloves to a cup of water (preferably purified or spring water) and let it sit for at least 6-8 hours, even overnight. You’ll notice that the longer you let it sit, the water will take on a darker brown color.

Next, you’ll need to strain it into a clean glass bottle with a tight sealed cover. When you are ready to use it, pour it into a spray bottle and use it to spray your scalp and hair.

How to Store Clove Water

Since clove is a natural preservative, you can store it by simply leaving it in the glass bottle or even in your spray bottle. For centuries, cloves have been used to preserve meat or other types of foods.

Leaving Clove Water in Your Hair Overnight

As long as you’re not allergic to cloves, you can leave the clove water in your hair overnight if you choose to.

When sprayed in your hair, clove water tends to dry real fast and leave your hair looking black, shiny, and smooth to the touch. You’ll even notice a nice fragrance that can get rid of odor from the scalp.

Hair Growth Timeframe With Clove Water

As with anything, consistency is the key. You’ll notice progress in the growth of your dreadlocks if you consistently use it the right way. Some people may see progress in their hair growth within 2 weeks.

The Right Way to Use Cloves for Longer Hair

There’s also a technique to apply clove water to your hair. Always make sure to apply it to your scalp and roots as well as massage it in. It needs to get to the root to stimulate hair growth.

Growing Dreadlocks: Starting Locs on Long Natural Hair

Two-strand Twist for Starter Locs
Two-strand Twists for Starter Locs

You don’t have to have short hair to start your dreadlocks. You can start it at whatever length your hair is, as long as it’s natural. Growing dreads on long hair is even better for you, since you’ll get a good head start on the growth.

I had dreadlocks in for 6 years and then decided that I wanted to comb out my locs. I combed them out, which took a good time to do so, but I was happy to see my loose natural hair again.

Now I’m starting to miss my dreads and thinking about maybe growing a second set of dreads or just keep doing my two-strand twists for the time being until I make up my mind.

I am glad I combed them out instead of cutting my hair because my hair would be really short and then I would have to start all over again, and having to deal with super short hair like the first time. Also, combing out my dreads allowed me to see my hair in its natural state and to have a lot of fun with a variety of styles.

A lot of people who are thinking about growing dreadlocks are worried about having to cut their hair off if they do decide to get rid of their dreads sometime in the near future, but it doesn’t have to be that way.  You can do like me and comb them out, although it is time consuming and requires a lot of conditioner to soften the texture of the hair.

Based on my experience from growing my dreads for 6 years, in the starting phase, it will take a couple months before it starts to look matted and look like actual dreads. Just keep in mind that the texture of your hair will determine how fast your hair will lock.

If you are undecided about growing dreadlocks, try palm-rolling your hair or doing two-strand twists and wear it for a while to see how you feel about dreads. This will only give an idea but growing dreadlocks is more deeper than that for some people and also, your hair will change in so many ways during the transition process.
