Changing Seasons: Rocking My Locs Plus Fall/Winter Care

20171004_190440As the seasons change, so are the needs of your dreadlocks. When the fall or winter season comes around, you may notice that your skin will look much more drier, which means that you have to have special products to replenish the natural moisture back into your skin. Well, your dreadlocks will require special care, too during the cold winter months.

Fall/winter care for dreadlocks require more than just pampering your hair. It also means that your scalp will need proper care as well. It is common for some people to experience dry, flaky scalp during the winter months. Learning to care for  your dreads during these upcoming seasons will preserve the beauty of your locs.

Oils for Locs During Fall and Winter

Using the right oils for your locs can make a huge difference in the overall health and appearance of your hair. You really have to keep replenishing the moisture in your hair, making sure to use the right oils to lock in the moisture in each strand of loc.

Creating and Sticking to a Dreadlocks Regimen in the Fall

As the brutally cold winter months approach, come up with a plan that works for your hair type. You may need to change to hair products that are more geared towards the fall or winter season. A customized fall haircare routine will help to prevent brittle and frizzy hair. One of the most recommended tips to keep your hair bouncy and alive during the fall is to moisturize your hair.

Remember how much work you had to put in to get your dreads to the stage where they are now. Neglecting to take care of them during the winter, will have a devastating effect on them if they are not protected during these colder months.

Fall/Winter Headwraps for Your Locs

Headwraps come in a wide array of colors and designs, and are great to cover your hair in the cold months. However, if you don’t want to be left with lint stuck in your dreads, you should choose a lint-free headwrap to cover your locs. This will prevent loose lint from getting trapped between the strands of your locs, and eventually become difficult to take out.

Winter Care Protective Styles

Wearing protective styles is the way to go if you want to keep your locs soft and beautiful during the fall and winter months. This is especially important before going to sleep at nights. You want to ensure that you don’t lose moisture as well as cause hair breakage.

Nighttime Winter Sleep Care

Covering your locs before going to bed, is also recommended to keep your hair moisturized during the winter. The cold windy days can leave your hair crying for  moisture, so moisturize and lock it in for ultimate daytime protection.

Oil and Water for Dreads: The Test I Did With My Locs

I have noticed that a lot of people are questioning whether or not they should use oil and water in their locs, if it’s safe or not. Well, I decided to take a slight risk to see if my locs would look and feel the same without my regular oil and water spritz.

Part of my daily locs care routine involved spraying a mist of water mixed with essential oils, and working it into my dreads. This keeps my hair moisturized and soft.

No Water and Oil Challenge on my Locs

As a test, I stopped spritzing my locs for a week, and was not pleased with the results. The first thing I noticed was that my dreads were becoming brown.

Then another thing I noticed was that my once soft, beautiful locs were not soft anymore, but instead had a stiff, crispy feeling. Also, my locs seemed to have gotten thinner.

They didn’t have the fluffy look they usually had. Image on left was before the no oil and water test. The image on the right was after a week without oil and water. Notice how my dreads were fluffier before and they were blacker.

This is enough for me to stick to what I was normally doing, spritzing my oil and water mixture on my locs on a daily basis. If it works for me, that’s what I’m going to stick with. I don’t know about other people, but based on their hair texture, they may need to spritz every other day, instead of every day.

The Misconception of Having Dreads

Dreadlocks need love and care. Some people think that we who have locs are just lazy and don’t want to wash or care for our hair, but they are so wrong.

If you stop taking care of your locs, you will definitely see the end results sooner or later. It really shows. You can look at someone’s locs and tell if they take good care of them or not.

The Cons of No Oil and Water

If you don’t give your locs water or oil, they will get dry, brittle, and starts to break over a period of time. If you think about it, each strand of loc is intertwined with coils of hair.

If you don’t mist your hair regularly, the inner strands will not be moisturized, resulting in dehydrated hair, ending in weak, dull locs that will break easily.

Final Thoughts on Oil and Water for Locs

In conclusion, this test proved to me that water and oil is beneficial to locs. Our hair, just like our body, needs to be hydrated at all times.

Dreadlocks Hairstyle: How I Gave My Long Locs a Short Makeover

Petal Locs HairstyleAchieving a short sassy look with longer locs is possible. If you are always yearning to try out some of the trendy short hairstyles for locs, but your dreads are on the longer side, there are a few tricks that you can do to wear your hair short, temporarily.

When I just started my dreads, I kind of liked the short messy look sometimes, but still wanted my hair to grow longer so I could do those cute hairstyles that required a good amount of length.

Fast forward to over 3 years of growing my locs, I sometimes wish to have shorter hairstyles, not necessarily short hair, so one day I decided to give my locs a short makeover with the popular petal hairstyle. I like the classy, chic look, that can be worn on any occasion. This is how long my locs was before doing this short style.

Keep Your Long Locs  Short With the Petal Hairstyle

Don’t worry about losing your beautiful head of locs if you decide to get this hairstyle done. There is a little trick to achieving this look without cutting a strand of your loc. All you need is a few small black elastic bands and you’re good to go.

The technique that is used for the petal locs hairstyle, is simply bending a strand of loc or a few at a time. If you have smaller locs, you may need to bend multiple locs at a time, then secure them with elastic bands.

If you do them the right way, the elastic bands won’t show. Make sure that you secure them near the roots of your locs. Another thing, if your hair is super long, you can bend your locs multiple times to get the desired length of your loops.

The good thing about this petal locs hairstyle, is that I still got to massage my scalp with my castor oil without pulling out the style.

This locs style is perfect for special occasions like weddings, receptions, parties, etc. If you cover your hair at nights, this hairstyle can last for 1-2 weeks, until you’re ready for a wash. To keep them hydrated and bouncy, spritz some water mixed with natural essential oils.
